The Inspiring Story of Potti Sriramulu: Sacrificing His Life for Linguistic Equality

He is remembered as a legendary figure who fought for the rights of the Telugu-speaking people in the Madras Presidency. Potti Sriramulu's contribution to the Indian freedom struggle is immense, and his sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

Born on March 16, 1901, in the village of Pandrugondi in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Potti Sriramulu was the youngest of six siblings. His father, Venkataiah, was a farmer, and his mother, Adilakshmi, was a housewife. Potti Sriramulu was an intelligent and curious child who had a strong interest in politics and social issues. He was deeply influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, and he was determined to contribute to the Indian freedom struggle.

In 1921, Potti Sriramulu joined the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the non-cooperation movement. He was arrested several times for his involvement in political activities. During his time in jail, Potti Sriramulu learned several languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, and English.

In 1938, the British government announced the formation of the Andhra Pradesh state, which included the Telugu-speaking areas of the Madras Presidency. However, the state was not given a separate identity, and the Telugu-speaking people continued to be treated as a minority in the Madras Presidency. Potti Sriramulu was deeply saddened by this, and he began a hunger strike on October 19, 1952, demanding a separate state for the Telugu-speaking people.

Potti Sriramulu's hunger strike continued for 58 days, during which his health deteriorated rapidly. Despite requests from the government and his supporters to end his fast, Potti Sriramulu refused to give up until his demand was met. Finally, on December 15, 1952, Potti Sriramulu breathed his last, and his sacrifice led to the formation of Andhra Pradesh as a separate state in 1953.

Potti Sriramulu's sacrifice inspired several other movements for the formation of separate states in India, including the Telangana movement in the 1960s and 70s. His contribution to the Indian freedom struggle is immense, and his legacy continues to inspire generations.

Potti Sriramulu's story is an inspiration to all of us. It is a reminder that one person's sacrifice can make a difference in the lives of millions. His commitment to his cause, his unwavering determination, and his willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for his people are qualities that we should all strive to emulate.
