On the night of the incident, Hemraj was also found murdered on the terrace of the apartment, with his head severely bludgeoned.

The case became a media sensation, and the investigation was widely criticized for mishandling crucial evidence and misleading leads. The police initially suspected the Talwars and accused them of committing the murders in a fit of rage. However, the Talwars denied any involvement and maintained their innocence throughout the trial.

The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in June 2008. After a lengthy investigation, the CBI filed a closure report in December 2010, stating that they had found no evidence to establish guilt against any of the suspects. However, the magistrate rejected the closure report and ordered the case to go to trial.

The trial began in 2012 and lasted for four years. In November 2013, the Talwars were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the couple appealed to the Allahabad High Court, and in October 2017, they were acquitted of all charges.
